Abraham Accords
The Abraham Accords are the 2020 normalization agreements, brokered by Jared Kushner, between Israel and the UAE, Bahrain, Sudan, and Morocco. They represent the first Arab-Israeli peace agreements since Jordan's in 1994 and signal a fundamental realignment: Arab states choosing to formalize cooperation with Israel against their shared enemy Iran, bypassing the traditional requirement of Palestinian statehood as a precondition.
The deals were announced in September 2020 at a White House ceremony attended by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, UAE Crown Prince Mohammed bin Zayed, Bahraini Foreign Minister Abdullatif al-Zayani, and Sudanese officials. Morocco normalized in December 2020, largely in exchange for US recognition of Moroccan sovereignty over Western Sahara. Trump presented the accords as a historic peace achievement; critics noted they did nothing for Palestinians and were explicitly designed to isolate Iran.
The strategic logic was MBS's: Saudi Arabia's real security threat is Iran, not Israel. Israel is a potential ally against the common enemy. The Palestinian issue, while publicly important, was privately treated as secondary to the Iran threat. By establishing formal diplomatic relations, these Sunni Arab states and Israel created the foundation for intelligence sharing, military cooperation, and economic ties, all implicitly directed against Tehran.
Saudi Arabia itself did not sign, but played a central facilitative role and was expected to be the next signatory under continued US pressure. The Hamas attack on October 7, 2023 dramatically complicated this path, Saudi Arabia would not be able to sign while Israel was killing civilians in Gaza. The Accords revealed a new Arab geopolitics, but also showed its limits: you can normalize with Israel privately, but public signing requires Israel not to be in the middle of a televised military campaign.
