Christian Zionism (Premillennial Dispensationalism)
A Protestant theological movement holding that the Jewish people's return to Israel and the rebuilding of the Jerusalem Temple are necessary preconditions for the Second Coming of Jesus, leading large segments of American evangelical Christianity to be more supportive of Israeli territorial maximalism than most American Jews, and creating a theologically motivated constituency for US Middle East policy.
Premillennial dispensationalism is a theological system developed primarily by John Nelson Darby (1800–1882) and popularized in the Scofield Reference Bible (1909). It divides history into distinct 'dispensations' (ages) and teaches that the current age will end with a 'Rapture' (faithful Christians taken directly to heaven), followed by a seven-year 'Tribulation' (global suffering under the Antichrist), and culminate in the Battle of Armageddon and Christ's thousand-year reign on Earth.
The Jewish dimension: within this framework, the Jewish people play a central eschatological role, they must be gathered back to Israel, rebuild the Temple, and face a final persecution (the 'Time of Jacob's Trouble') before recognizing Jesus as the Messiah at his Second Coming. This means Israel's territorial expansion and the Temple Mount's control are literally prerequisites for the Second Coming in this theology. Christians United for Israel (CUFI), founded by John Hagee, explicitly mobilizes on this basis.
The political consequence: American evangelical Christians who hold premillennial dispensationalist views constitute one of the most powerful constituencies for aggressive US Middle East policy. This includes opposition to any Israeli territorial concessions, support for moving the US Embassy to Jerusalem (done under Trump), and hostility to any Palestinian state that would compromise Israeli control. Their motivation is not ethnic solidarity with Jews but eschatological necessity.
The strange alliance: from a Jewish perspective, Christian Zionism is simultaneously the most powerful non-Jewish support base for Israel and theologically deeply problematic, the Christian Zionist script ends with Jews either converting to Christianity or being condemned at Armageddon.
