Conquistadors and Demographic Collapse
The Spanish Conquest of the Americas (1492–1600) produced the largest demographic catastrophe in recorded history: indigenous population collapse from approximately 50–60 million people to 5–6 million within 100 years, primarily from epidemic disease (smallpox, measles, influenza, to which indigenous populations had no prior immunity) rather than direct military killing, representing an unintentional biological weapon that made conquest logistically possible and permanently shaped the demographics of the Americas.
Hernán Cortés conquered the Aztec Empire (population ~5–6 million) with 500 Spanish soldiers and a few hundred indigenous allies. Francisco Pizarro conquered the Inca Empire (population ~10–12 million, controlling over 3,000 miles of territory) with 168 men. The disproportion between attacking force and defending population requires explanation beyond Spanish military technology (though steel swords, horses, and firearms were significant advantages). The explanation is primarily biological: epidemic disease preceded the Spanish armies.
Indigenous American populations had been isolated from the Afro-Eurasian disease pool for approximately 12,000–15,000 years, the period since the land bridge between Siberia and Alaska closed. They had no prior exposure to (and therefore no evolved immune response to) smallpox, measles, influenza, typhus, and other diseases that were endemic in the Old World. Epidemics from the early Spanish contacts (beginning 1492) spread through trade and contact networks throughout the Americas well before Spanish armies arrived in most regions. When Cortés arrived in Mexico in 1519, smallpox may have already killed 25-50% of the Aztec population. The Aztec emperor Cuitláhuac, who briefly led resistance after Moctezuma's death, died of smallpox within months of assuming power.
The demographic collapse had consequences that extended far beyond the conquest itself. The near-elimination of the indigenous labor force (through death, disruption, and demoralization) was one driver of the Atlantic slave trade: when the Encomienda system (forced indigenous labor for Spanish landowners) collapsed due to population decline, plantation owners demanded labor from Africa. The demographic collapse thus connects the conquest of the Americas to the African slave trade, two of history's most consequential forced migrations, through the mechanism of epidemic disease.
