Demiurge (Gnostic Cosmology)
In Gnostic cosmology, the Demiurge is the false god, the creator of the material world, who is not the true ultimate divinity but a lesser, flawed being (in some traditions, malevolent) who fashioned the physical universe as a prison for divine sparks of the true God. The Demiurge believes he is the supreme creator ('I am the Lord thy God; thou shalt have no other gods before me') but is ignorant of the higher divinity above him. Gnosticism equates the Old Testament Yahweh with the Demiurge.
Gnosticism was a diverse set of religious movements flourishing in the 1st–3rd centuries CE, centered on the idea that the material world is a mistake or a trap, and that salvation consists of gnosis, direct experiential knowledge of the true God, rather than faith or works. The Gnostic cosmology begins with the Monad (the true God, infinite, unknowable, perfect), from which a series of divine emanations (Aeons) proceed. Sophia (Wisdom), the last Aeon, falls through pride or error, generating the Demiurge outside the divine realm.
The Demiurge, identified in different Gnostic schools as Yaldabaoth, Samael, or Saclas, is ignorant of the Monad above him and believes himself the supreme creator. His creation of the material world is a catastrophe: physical matter is essentially evil (or at best, irredeemably imperfect), and the divine sparks (pneuma) of the true God trapped in human beings are imprisoned within it. The goal of the Gnostic is to recognize this trap, gain gnosis, and ascend through the material spheres back to the Monad after death.
