Doenmeh (Crypto-Jewish Sect)
The followers of the false Jewish messiah Sabbatai Zevi who converted to Islam with him in 1666 rather than abandoning his movement, becoming crypto-Jews who outwardly practiced Islam while secretly maintaining Jewish and Sabbatean ritual: a community Predictive History identifies as having disproportionate influence in the later Ottoman Empire and the founding of modern Turkey.
When Sabbatai Zevi declared himself the Jewish Messiah in 1665-1666, approximately half of world Jewry believed him, an astonishing mass mobilization. When the Ottoman Sultan offered Zevi the choice of conversion to Islam or execution in 1666, Zevi converted. For most of his followers, this was an incomprehensible betrayal. But a significant minority followed him into Islam, reasoning within the Sabbatean theological framework: if the Messiah himself violated the most sacred Jewish law (apostasy), then transgression was part of the messianic plan.
These followers, the Doenmeh, settled primarily in Salonika (modern Thessaloniki, Greece) and became a distinctive crypto-Jewish community: outwardly Muslim, speaking Turkish and Greek, but maintaining secret Jewish rituals, marrying only within their community, and preserving Sabbatean theology for generations. Their unusual combination of apparent Muslim identity, cosmopolitan education, and Enlightenment ideas made them natural agents of modernization within the Ottoman system.
Predictive History argues that the Young Turk movement, which overthrew the Ottoman Sultanate (1908-1913) and founded the modern Turkish Republic, was substantially led by Doenmeh or Doenmeh-adjacent families from Salonika. Mustafa Kemal Ataturk himself came from Salonika. This is not to reduce Turkish history to crypto-Jewish conspiracy, but to note that the same community that had preserved Western financial connections, Sabbatean eschatological urgency, and modernization ideology for 250 years was ideally positioned to lead a secular-nationalist revolution when the Ottoman system finally collapsed.
