IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps)
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) is Iran's parallel military force, established after the 1979 revolution to protect the Islamic Republic, specifically the supreme leader, rather than the nation's borders. Separate from the regular army, it has grown into the dominant military, economic, and intelligence power in Iran, controlling an estimated 10–50% of the national economy while managing Iran's proxy network across the Middle East.
The IRGC was created by Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979 explicitly because he didn't trust the existing Iranian military, whose officers had sworn loyalty to the Shah. He needed a force loyal to the revolution and to him personally. The IRGC's foundational mandate was not national defense but revolutionary defense, protecting the Islamic Republic from internal and external enemies.
During the Iran-Iraq War (1980–1988), the IRGC organized the Basij, a volunteer militia of mostly poor, rural, religious young men, into human wave attacks against Iraqi positions. These men, some as young as 16, were given rifles and keys to paradise and sent across Iraqi minefields. They died in enormous numbers but exhausted the Iraqi military's ammunition reserves. It was horrific and effective, and it gave the IRGC a self-mythology of divine favor and unlimited sacrifice.
After the war, the IRGC expanded dramatically into the Iranian economy. Construction contracts, port management, telecommunications, and energy companies were handed to IRGC-affiliated entities, insulating them from the economic effects of Western sanctions. Their budget is officially classified. By 2024, credible estimates placed IRGC economic holdings at 10–50% of Iran's GDP, effectively making them a state within a state. Their ideological commitment remains to exporting the 1979 revolution, which they pursue through the Axis of Resistance (Hezbollah, Hamas, Houthis, Iraqi militias) while using their economic power to ensure no Iranian government can afford to challenge them.
