Christian Zionism
Christian Zionism is a theological movement, predominantly within American evangelical Christianity, that holds Christians have a religious duty to support Jewish control of Israel, because a Jewish-governed Israel is a prerequisite for the Second Coming of Jesus. It emerged from 19th-century Protestant biblical interpretation and today represents one of the most politically powerful forces shaping US Middle East policy.
The movement is rooted in dispensational premillennialism, the belief that the Bible contains a literal prophecy about end times that must be actively fulfilled. According to this theology, several things must happen before Jesus returns: the Jewish people must return to their biblical homeland, Israel must exist as a nation, the Temple must be rebuilt on the Temple Mount, and Israel must be attacked by all the nations of the world. Then Jesus returns, destroys the enemies, and establishes a thousand-year kingdom of peace.
This means Christian Zionists are not simply pro-Israel out of sympathy, they are pro-Israel because they believe a Jewish-controlled Israel is a necessary step in a divine prophecy they want to see fulfilled. Organizations like Christians United for Israel (CUFI), with 7 million members, explicitly advocate for US military support for Israel and escalation against Iran, because they believe conflict in the Middle East advances this prophetic timeline.
Critics, including many mainstream Christians, argue this is theologically perverse. It treats the Jewish people as pawns in a Christian end-times drama, because the prophecy also holds that two-thirds of all Jews will die in the final battle, and the surviving third will convert to Christianity. Jewish groups have noted the uncomfortable irony: Christian Zionists support Israel today specifically because they believe Judaism will cease to exist after the Second Coming.
