Geographic Determinism
Geographic Determinism is the analytical principle, applied throughout Predictive History, that geography is destiny: a civilization's physical environment (coastline vs. inland, fertile plains vs. rocky mountains, river valleys vs. steppe) determines its economy, which determines its military structure, which determines its political system, explaining why Athens became a maritime democracy, Sparta became a militaristic oligarchy, Macedonia became a cavalry monarchy, and Rome became a disciplined republican war machine.
The principle that geography shapes civilization is ancient, Hippocrates argued it in the 5th century BCE, but Predictive History elevates it to a central explanatory framework. The argument is not that geography deterministically produces specific cultures, but that it creates constraints and incentives that strongly channel what types of societies are viable. A society on a coastline has access to maritime trade, which creates merchant classes, which incentivizes literacy and openness to new ideas, which tends toward democratic or oligarchic governance. A society on fertile plains must control the land and the population working it, which incentivizes strong central authority and military organization.
The Athens-Sparta contrast illustrates the principle perfectly. Athens sits on the Attic peninsula, poor agricultural land, but excellent harbor access at Piraeus. Athens's economy was forced to become maritime and commercial; its citizens were sailors and traders. Any Athenian man could row a trireme (requiring no equipment, just labor), so military service was open to the poor, which gave the poor political leverage, which produced democracy. Sparta occupied the Eurotas valley on the Peloponnese, rich agricultural plains. Those plains required labor; Sparta conquered the Messenians and made them helots; helot control required constant military readiness; military readiness required the Agoge; the Agoge required oligarchic state control of education and citizenship. Geography → Economy → Military → Politics.
Predictive History applies the principle globally: China's geography (fertile river valleys surrounded by mountains and desert) produced centralized imperial bureaucracy; India's geography (isolated by ocean and mountains, but internally diverse) produced polytheistic pluralism; Russia's geography (vast, cold plains with no natural western borders) produced expansionist paranoia and collectivist culture. The framework is not absolute determinism, exceptional individuals and historical contingency matter, but geography sets the menu of viable options from which history chooses.
