John Nash (1928–2015) proved that every finite game, any situation with a defined set of players, strategies, and payoffs, has at least one equilibrium point. At a Nash equilibrium, every player's strategy is their best response to every other player's strategy: no one has an incentive to deviate unilaterally. This seems like a recipe for optimal outcomes, but Nash's insight is more unsettling: the equilibrium can be profoundly sub-optimal for everyone involved.

The Prisoner's Dilemma illustrates this. Two suspects are interrogated separately. If both stay silent, both get light sentences. If both confess, both get heavy sentences. If one confesses and the other stays silent, the confessor goes free and the silent one gets the maximum sentence. Each prisoner, reasoning individually, concludes that confessing is their best strategy regardless of what the other does, so both confess and both get heavy sentences, a worse outcome than if they had coordinated. The equilibrium is collectively irrational but individually inescapable.

Nash equilibria explain why broken systems persist. School systems keep rewarding test scores over curiosity because every teacher, administrator, and parent responds rationally to the system's incentives, but the system produces students who hate learning. Arms races continue when both sides would prefer disarmament. Dollar hegemony persists even as developing nations resent it: any single nation that stops using dollars suffers alone. Changing Nash equilibria requires changing the game, altering rules and incentives so that the individually rational choice is also collectively beneficial.
