Vladimir Lenin
Revolutionary leader (1870–1924) who adapted Marxism to Russian conditions, arguing that a professional vanguard party could lead peasant revolution directly to communism, bypassing capitalism, and who seized power in October 1917.
Lenin's intellectual contribution to Marxism was his theory of the vanguard party: classical Marxism required capitalism to mature and create a large industrial proletariat before revolution was possible. Russia in 1917 was 80% peasant, barely industrialized. Lenin argued that a small, disciplined party of professional revolutionaries could substitute for the missing proletariat, leading the peasants to communism directly, using their discontent as raw material.
This was not just a tactical adjustment but a philosophical one: it moved from historical determinism (capitalism creates its own gravediggers) to voluntarism (a dedicated party can create revolution regardless of material conditions). The implications were enormous: if a vanguard can impose revolution regardless of circumstances, then the masses are not agents of history but material to be mobilized by those who know the truth.
His political genius was sloganeering: 'Peace, Land, Bread', three promises that addressed Russians' three most urgent needs. His organizational genius was the professional revolutionary party, disciplined, hierarchical, capable of acting while coalitions dissolved around it. His moral system was explicit: what serves the revolution is moral; what hinders it is immoral. This framework justified anything.
