Abbasid Caliphate
The Islamic empire (750–1258 CE) centered on Baghdad that presided over the Islamic Golden Age, when Muslim scholars translated Greek philosophy, pioneered algebra, and made the medieval world's greatest advances in science, medicine, and philosophy.
The Abbasids overthrew the Umayyad Caliphate in 750 CE and moved the Islamic capital from Damascus to the newly built Baghdad, placing it at the center of the world's trade routes between the Mediterranean, India, and China. For the next five centuries, Baghdad was the world's largest city and the center of human intellectual achievement.
The House of Wisdom (Bayt al-Hikma), founded by Caliph Harun al-Rashid and expanded by al-Ma'mun, was the world's greatest library and translation center. Scholars systematically translated all available Greek texts into Arabic, preserving and building on Aristotle, Plato, Euclid, Galen, and Ptolemy. Without the Abbasids, these texts would have been lost to Western civilization entirely.
The Abbasid era produced transformative intellectual achievements: al-Khwarizmi invented algebra (the word comes from his book al-Kitab al-mukhtasar fi hisab al-jabr); Ibn Sina (Avicenna) wrote the Canon of Medicine that was used in European universities for 600 years; al-Biruni measured the Earth's circumference with remarkable accuracy.
The Mongol Sack of Baghdad (1258) ended the Abbasid Caliphate and burned the House of Wisdom, one of history's most devastating single cultural catastrophes.
