Al-Khwarizmi

9th-century Persian mathematician at Baghdad's House of Wisdom whose treatise on systematic equation-solving gave us the word 'algebra' (from al-jabr), and whose name, Latinized as Algoritmi, gave us the word 'algorithm': the intellectual foundation of every computer ever built.

Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi (c. 780–850) worked at Baghdad's House of Wisdom under the Abbasid caliphs. His treatise Al-Kitāb al-mukhtaṣar fī ḥisāb al-jabr wal-muqābala ('The Compendious Book on Calculation by Completion and Balancing') laid out systematic methods for solving linear and quadratic equations, what we now call algebra.

The word algebra comes directly from al-jabr (completion/restoration, the operation of moving a term from one side of an equation to the other). The word algorithm comes from the Latinization of his name: Algoritmi. Every time a computer executes an algorithm, it performs an operation whose name honors a 9th-century Persian mathematician.
